Rénoclimat: Up to $4,000 in Financial Assistance for Residential Batteries in Quebec

October 2026

Power outages are a reality in Quebec, from ice storms and strong winds to extreme temperatures. For the first time, the Quebec government is formally recognizing the role of energy storage in strengthening household resilience. Since October 1, 2026, the Rénoclimat program has offered financial assistance of up to $4,000 for the installation of a stationary battery system in a home.

At Volthium, we design lithium energy storage systems right here in Quebec. We see this as excellent news for homeowners and the industry as a whole. Here’s what you need to know.

What the New Measure Covers

The “Addition of a Stationary Battery” measure is among the new features of the Rénoclimat program that came into effect on October 1, 2026.

  • Amount: Up to $4,000 per eligible dwelling, without exceeding the actual cost of the work before taxes.
  • Date: Only work carried out on or after October 1, 2026, is eligible. The measure is not retroactive.
  • Eligible properties: Primary residences and multi-unit residential buildings only.
  • Installation: A licensed electrician holding the appropriate RBQ licences must perform the work and sign the certificate of compliance.

Good to know: Separate financial assistance of up to $1,000 is also available for work involving connection to a backup power source.

Which Systems Are Eligible?

According to the program requirements, the system must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a complete system, including at least one battery and an inverter;
  • Be permanently installed and connected to the home’s electrical panel;
  • Provide a minimum capacity of 5 kWh;
  • Operate in parallel with the electrical grid;
  • Use a pure sine wave inverter that complies with Hydro-Québec’s E.12-07 standard.

Portable batteries and electric vehicles are not eligible.

Why This Is an Important Step Forward

For a long time, residential batteries were seen as a niche product, primarily intended for off-grid cabins or those passionate about energy independence. This new measure is a game changer. It confirms that energy storage is a practical solution for safety and resilience for Quebec families.

A properly sized battery backup system can:

  • Keep backup heating, the refrigerator, sump pump, and lighting running during a power outage;
  • Avoid the noise, maintenance, and exhaust fumes associated with fuel-powered generators;
  • Prepare the home for the future installation of solar panels.

The Volthium Approach: Complete Systems Designed in Quebec

At Volthium, we do more than just sell batteries. We offer complete systems : lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries, inverters, and accessories, all solar-ready. The battery management system (BMS) is integrated, and automatic power transfer is handled by the inverter.

Our solutions are designed in Quebec to meet the challenges of our climate and electrical grid. Whether you’re a homeowner, installer, or distributor, our team can help you choose the right system for your project.

How to Apply

  1. Validate your project: Make sure your home and the selected system meet the program’s eligibility criteria.
  2. Hire an RBQ-licensed contractor: Ensure the installation is carried out by a qualified contractor on or after October 1, 2026.
  3. Keep your documentation: Detailed invoices, proof of payment, a signed certificate of compliance, and photos of the completed work.
  4. Submit your application: Apply through the Rénoclimat online portal, which is expected to open this fall.

Since funding is available only until the budget is exhausted, it’s best not to wait too long.
